Sept. 19, 2019 Food for the Body and Soul
Among the many people who are homeless in San Diego, a significant number are living in their cars. To help keep these people safe as they seek more permanent housing, the New Life Assembly of God church allows about 25 such individuals – men, women and families -- to park overnight in their gated parking lot. For the past year, working with the San Diego Youth Assistance Coalition, the Service Ministry Team has been preparing and serving them dinner on the first Tuesday and second Monday of every month. While most of the families who stay at the parking lot have employment, it is a stretch to make the ends meet when any food they purchase cannot be cooked or stored. The option of having a healthy dinner a few nights a week can make a big difference in quality of life for these families. We have experienced team leaders for each night, but we’re looking for volunteers to assist in shopping, meal preparation, cookie baking and/or serving the meals. The tasks are easy, the parking lot is just over the bridge from Coronado, the time commitment is small; we leave at 5:30 and we’re home by 7:30. The best parts are the opportunity for connection and the joy of providing much needed help to your neighbors. If you would like to be part of the team, please contact Charlette Preslar.
