Feb. 21, 2019 Head Start Book Drive
This year for our annual Lenten Drive, we will be partnering with our Day School to collect new and gently used children's books for ages 0-4 for children in Episcopal Community Service's Head Start program. Head Start is a federally funded program designed to give low-income children a "head start" on school readiness so they can begin kindergarten with the skills to succeed. Reading is key to academic success. The earlier children are exposed to books and reading, the better they do in school and in life! There are 2,000 children in ECS's Head Start program who need our help!
Over the six Sundays in Lent, we will be collecting new and very gently used children's books appropriate for ages 0-4. We're looking for donations of board books, paperbacks, and hardcovers in English, Spanish, or bilingual. Because Head Start is a federal program, books cannot have any religious themes. Not sure what to buy? We have experts ready to pick the very best books for this age range! Our goal is to collect $5000 over Lent to purchase books. Books will go to classrooms throughout San Diego County, including the new ECS preschool on the campus of St John's Episcopal Church in Chula Vista! If we collect enough books, we can send them home with children as well!
Look for the table in the courtyard every Sunday in Lent for more information, to drop off your book donations, or to give toward our $5000 goal. Together we can make a difference in the lives of 2000 of our youngest brothers and sisters right here in San Diego County!
