March 20, 2018 Have you considered Christ Church Day School?

What do you envision when you imagine elementary school for your child? Do you imagine a safe place, one where your child is a unique and important part of the school community? A place where no matter your beliefs, basic virtues of love and service are intertwined with all aspects of learning? A place for your child to confidently explore their creativity in music, art, Spanish, drama, science, technology and more? A place where small class size enables non-traditional learning experiences? A place where life-long friends are made? A place where everyone knows your name? Then Christ Church Day School might be just the place for you!

Christ Church Day School is a small Episcopal school located in the heart of Coronado. It has served the community for over six decades. Established in the early fifties as a parish outreach, the school has developed a rich tradition of academic excellence while teaching to the whole child. CCDS currently offers classes for children in junior kindergarten through sixth grade in Coronado and beyond.

CCDS offers a safe and nurturing environment for students in small classes, 16 students maximum, and tailored to address learning in innovative ways for each and every student. CCDS believes that students should become lifelong learners; therefore the focus is developing successful individuals by brining learning to life. CCDS engages students to reason, create, serve, and lead in a nurturing, inclusive Episcopal learning community.

Junior kindergarteners attend class in a facility all their own which includes play space. Junior kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade have full-time classroom aides to assist the teacher and provide specialized individual attention to students. There are specialty teachers for music, physical education, art, and Spanish. Classrooms are equipped with Smart Board technology to enhance the learning experience. Classrooms have computers and fifth and sixth grade students are each issued laptops. There is a cozy campus library that is enjoyed by all. Each classroom has a plot in our award winning school garden where they tend insect friendly plants and edible vegetables and herbs. After school clubs are offered and aftercare is available for families that might need it.

Tradition runs deep at CCDS. Many CCDS graduates, now with school-age children themselves, remember second grade Ancestor Night, Spring Sing and Christmas chapel, school trips, year-end play day, and their sixth grade buddy when they were kindergartners, and the ever popular drama productions. School staff successfully balances the new and the traditional to cultivate a rich educational experience, one that CCDS graduates often seek for their own children.

Students attend chapel twice a week, a time to gather together to worship and then assemble around the flagpole for the pledge, a rousing patriotic song and school announcements. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Chaplain Charlette Preslar provides spiritual nurture classes each week that focus on connecting scripture to the school's core virtues. Each month a different virtue is explored during both chapel and Spiritual Nurture. Monthly virtues include: Belonging, Respect, Resonsibility, Fairness, Kindness, Honesty, Compassion, Forgiveness and Generosity. The parish rector the Reverend Anne Bridgers, Chaplain Charlette, and head of school, Mrs. Nancy Funk work in concert with school staff to provide the assistance and guidance that parents and students often need. Head of School Mrs. Nancy Funk meets with classroom parents on a regular basis throughout the school year with Wednesday morning coffees to discuss up-coming plans, parental concerns, curriculum specifics, etc. The school’s strong parent leadership involvement includes an active school board, classroom representatives and parent helpers, as well as parents who volunteer to teach art history.

Why not come by and visit? Our admissions specialist Mrs. Nancy Iverson will meet with you and provide a tour of the facilities. You’ll have a chance to observe classrooms and meet with grade-level teachers. Mrs. Iverson will assess just where your child will best be served at CCDS. Tuition assistance and sibling discounts are available to qualifying families.

In this big, wide world we all want a sense of belonging and when you step on the CCDS campus that’s just what you feel. Do you belong at Christ Church Day School? Please follow this link to find out.
