2008 SERVICE MINISTRY FOCUS ON HUNGER

I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in...Matthew 25:35

Christ Church's focus for service in 2008 will be HUNGER - on a local, national, and global scale. The task is overwhelming but together we can make a difference.

Hunger Fact - April 28, 2008

Tell Congress: Keep Food Affordable for Poor People - Congress is still debating the Farm Bill, the legislative package that governs our food and farm policy, including international food aid programs. A simple change to the law--to allow some cash for local purchases of food--would immediately increase the efficiency of food aid programs and feed more hungry people. If these changes aren't made, fewer people will be fed.

MAY 2008 - HANDS-ON PROJECT - San Diego Food Bank

Saturday, May 17th, Service Ministry will present a hands-on opportunity for young (over 6 years old) and old. We have volunteered to work at the San Diego Food Bank helping to sort food contributions from 9:00 a.m to 12:00 noon. We will be carpooling. We're hoping to have a couple dozen volunteers so signup after services in the courtyard or RSVP to the parish office so we'll know you're coming!

WEEKLY FOOD COLLECTIONS - will continue all summer to help out San Diegans who may be running a little short. We help supply the food pantries at St. Mark’s (University City) and ESC Emergency Assistance at St. Philip-the-Apostle (Lemon Grove).  All types of food are very welcome but we’re focusing on a different food theme each Sunday this summer to make your shopping outings a little more fun and supply the pantries with the foods they primarily distribute. Get the kids and grandkids involved!  Watch for special blessings of our heartfelt donations at the end of each month.

Service Ministry Charter

Ministry Mission: To maintain and expand the caring work of Christ outside of the Parish and to promote fellowship through service.

Specific tasks:

1.) With input from the parish community, develop both "contributory" and "hands-on" service projects, perhaps in coordination with local charitable organizations including the Coronado Council of Churches.

2.) Fully include children and youth in service projects by seeking the pariticipation of the Sunday school, youth group, Christ Church Day School students and their familes.

3.) Strengthen the parish relationship with Episcopal Community Services (ECS) through service ministry. www.ecscalifornia.org

4.) Remain alert for special needs in the local community, in areas outside of the local area, and in foreign countries. Select from among the many

needs the places where the outreach budget should be focused.

5.) Propose and administer the approved Service Ministry budget.

6.) Coordinate parish wide outreach efforts.

7.) Publicize, with the Parish and community at large, the efforts of the Service Ministry.

8.) Recruit parishioners to volunteer for community service through articles in the Communicator and personal contact.

9.) Maintain a presence on the Regional Diocesan Mission Strategy Group.

10.) Assess potential service projects by how well they meet the parish's desire for hands-on activities and the potential for involvement of all age groups.

11.) Report periodically to the Vestry on activities of interest and plans for the future.
