From the Headmistress - May 2008

“This year is going by so fast!”  This is the sentiment I am feeling and hearing from teachers, parents, church staff and even the students.  It is almost to the point that the days racing by are putting an added stress on us all.  I wonder why that is?  Is it because we have so much to do, we tend to be constantly planning ahead and forgetting to take enough time to savor the joys of the immediate moment?

I don’t know, but I do know that I can learn by observing the intense interest and sense of wonder a young child exhibits examining a butterfly on a leaf or the discovery of a treasured shell on the beach.  In each case, the child is immersed in the joy of the moment to the exclusion of all else.  Thoughts of what might happen next, or be required later, are forgotten.  So at this time, as the school year is drawing to its cyclic end, I know I must make a conscious effort to take a deep breath, slow down, and center myself.  I haven’t mastered doing it as simply as that young child, but when I try, a calmness and sense of appreciation for the here and now engulf me.

Loving, gifted teachers, caring and giving parents, my family, and the marvel of our CCDS students are among my secret treasures and blessings.  Taking a needed moment to appreciate the blessings they bring to my life helps me slow things down a bit.  Time becomes very real and present.  These moments should not be spent worrying over something now or anticipating something in the future.

This is especially true for our 6th graders.  The anxious moments of deciding what school to attend next year is over for the students and their families.  Before the students move on as they should and become part of another school’s 7th grade class, now is a time to enjoy each day we have with one another.

As I write this, we are preparing for our 6th grade trip to the East Coast, which covers nine days of historic and present day sites from Boston to Washington, DC.  So students and parents will have a change of pace, be able to celebrate and learn together, and savor the time together.

The faculty, staff and fellow CCDS families are very proud of the class of 2008. When the 6th graders graduate, they will be going to the following schools in the fall:

The Bishop’s School - Celeste Crawford, Meredith Shuffett and Kelly Vogel

Center for Learning by the Sea - Natalie Jackson

Coronado Middle School - Jake Blocker, Ale Bruyere, Ian Catherwood, Marty Dykstra, Jenna Lecocq, Adam Weiss, and Henry Wilbur

Francis Parker School - Patricia Fernandez

St. Rose of Lima or Einstein Academy - Carlos de la Lama
