Parish Highlights – 1st Quarter 2008
Dear Friends in Christ,
The first few months of 2008 have literally flown by as parishioners expand upon the parish ministries formed in 2007, and the 2008 Vestry (with six new members) settles in to its responsibilities. We thought it would be worthwhile to take stock of a few recent accomplishments within Christ Church.
• We welcomed 744 worshippers at our Christmas services, and 524 worshippers at the three Easter services, just three months later.
• Our Pledge Campaign raised $484,000 in pledges from 192 families, the most in Christ Church’s history. And, you can still join in the 2008 Pledge Campaign by calling the office and asking for a pledge card.
• Our Service Ministry, with the Pastoral Care Ministry and the Christ Church Day School, hosted a spaghetti supper to collect food for St. Mark’s Church food cupboard. Over 25 boxes of food were contributed to the food cupboard as a result of this event.
• The Service Ministry also hosted an informational evening about the One Acre program in Kenya which raised over $2,000 for that worthy project.
• Our Youth Ministry sponsored an overnight trip to Camp Stevens for twelve of our youth that involved Camp Stevens work projects, as well as lots of fun for all.
• Our Adult Christian Education Ministry sponsored a Lenten evening series on Walking the Bible which engaged about 35-40 parishioners in spirit-filled discussions over a six-week period. The Ministry also commenced the first in a series of movie nights on Wednesdays.
• Our active Evangelism Ministry is expanding their care of newcomers. There are now trained and identifiable greeters with handouts at every service, a greeters' table on the patio afterward, and systematic follow-up calls. They sponsored two Sunday afternoon welcoming receptions for newcomers at the Rectory this quarter, and implemented the first of many Shepherding Dinners to complete the integration of newcomers into the parish.
• The Evangelism Ministry also conducted the second “Coronado 101” session at Christ Church in late March, to introduce our church to a wider spectrum of the community. The ministry welcomed 55 Coronadoans to participate in a four-hour program on local gardening techniques that was of interest to all, followed by refreshments.
• Our Pastoral Care Ministry continued to make regular visits to shut-ins to offer the Eucharist, as well as to provide transportation assistance through Care-Link. Martha’s Cupboard is bursting with a variety of meals suitable for the entire family. These are available to all parishioners for any purpose from the Hinde Hall freezer.
• Our Music Ministry has brought us many fine in-house and guest programs this spring, including the participation of the Mountain View Chamber Singers from Maine in a Sunday Service.
• We have formed a new Properties Ministry, under the joint leadership of Vestry members Bob Ketts and Frank Gibbons, and including four other parishioners. They are developing a planned maintenance schedule for our church property, while dealing with immediate repair issues. A recent highlight was the refinishing of the Hinde Hall, the church chancel and narthex floors, thanks to strong financial support from our Thrift Shop. They are planning a Parish Work Day for June 7.
None of this would have happened without the time, energy and financial support of each one of you. Christ Church is making a difference in the lives of our parishioners and our community. We are grateful for your being part of this wonderful journey.
Sincerely,
Ron Jaynes, Interim Rector Sam Ward, Senior Warden
