READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY
CHRISTIAN FORMATION
Adult Forum - 9:00 - 9:50 a.m. Hinde Hall
February 5 - The Anglican Covenant
We will discuss the proposed Anglican Covenant. What is it? How and why was it drafted? If adopted, what would it mean for the Episcopal Church and for the Anglican Communion? And why is it so controversial? The covenant will be a highly debated topic at this year's General Convention. Come learn more about it, and tell us what you think!
February 12 - Annual Meeting - Ministry Reports
February 19 - The History of Lent
This week we'll prepare for Ash Wednesday with an overview of the season of Lent. When did people begin observance of Lent? How have people kept this holy season in different times and geographic locations? What practices can we take on to make this Lent spiritually meaningful in our own lives?
Understanding the Old Testament Prophets
During the season of Lent, adult forum will focus on the "major prophets": Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel. In this five-week series, we will begin by exploring the history of the People of Israel, from the great kings through the exile and return, up to the time of the birth of Jesus. Once we have become familiar with the historical background, we will spend each of the following four weeks learning about a different prophetic book. Authorship, audience, political climate, and overall message will all inform our discussion of the prophet's role in the events that transpired in his own day.
Sunday, February 25 - Old Testament History
Ever felt confused by brief excerpts from the Old Testament? Want to get a handle on what was happening during different eras of Israel's history? This is the session for you! Join us as we review the formation of the kingdom of Israel, the fall of the Temple, the exile, and much more!
Sunday, March 4 - Isaiah
One of the most-often quoted Hebrew Scriptures by the authors of the Gospels, the Book of Isaiah has been dear to the hearts of Jewish and Christian readers for ages. The Church fathers even referred to it as the "Fifth Gospel." Why is it so important, and why does it still resonate with us so much today? At this week's forum, we will learn about the prophet Isaiah, himself, as well as the authorship and context of the book as a whole.
"Surely God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid, for the Lord God is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation." Isaiah 12:2
Sunday, March 11 - Jeremiah
The Book of Jeremiah, the second of the major prophets, seeks to come to terms with and move beyond the destruction of Judah and Jerusalem by Babylon. But who was the man, Jeremiah? How did his life serve as a symbol of the fall and restoration of the nation? And if he didn't write the book that bears his name, who did? Answers to all these questions and more at this week's forum!
"The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah . . . I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people." Jeremiah 31:31, 33
Sunday, March 18 - Ezekiel
Ezekiel was among those exiled to Babylon following the fall of Jerusalem. In the Book of Ezekiel, we find a people grappling with questions of where God is in disaster. Why is Israel in exile? Is God unjust? Why couldn't God protect the promised land? Can God do anything to help the people now that they're in exile? This week at forum, we'll discuss the exile itself, as well as how Ezekiel's message brought hope to the people.
"They shall know that I am the Lord their God because I sent them into exile among the nations, and then gathered them into their own land. I will leave none of them behind; and I will never again hide my face from them, when I pour out my spirit upon the house of Israel, says the Lord God." Ezekiel 39: 28-29
Sunday, March 25 - Daniel
With its strange creatures, symbolic numbers, and supernatural events, it's no wonder apocalyptic writing can be so confusing to modern readers! This week, as we conclude our study of the major prophets, we'll make sense of the events and visions in the Book of Daniel, and we'll talk about what messages this book might contain for us as 21st century Christians.
"I saw one like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him. To him was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all the peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed." Daniel 7:13-14
Wednesday evening soup supper series begins February 29
"At One with God": Theories of the Atonement
Throughout the ages, Christians have sought to explain the connection between Jesus' death on the cross and our own salvation. We know that we have been reconciled to God, but we often struggle to explain how and why the events of Good Friday and Easter Sunday accomplished that reconciliation. During this season of Lent, we will explore in detail some of the major theories of atonement from different eras of Christian history. Join us for this four-part series as we consider how each of these theories offers us valuable insight into the nature of God, as well as how each theory, on its own, falls short of fully explaining the Paschal Mystery.
