Oct. 10, 2017 Celebration of Holy Baptism - November 5th at 10:00 a.m.

Let’s light that candle!

Our service of Holy Baptism combines ancient rhythms with contemporary necessities as we welcome the newly baptized into the Christian family.  One essential element which carries both old and new significance is the lighting of the Paschal Candle. The tallest candle in the church is lighted anew at the Great Easter Vigil and then is lighted in the following year at every service of baptism. The burning flame and the ascending smoke remind us that the Light of Christ shines in the darkness illumines our path toward Almighty God.

Each newly baptized person, regardless of age, receives an individual candle which has been lighted from the flame of the Paschal Candle. Parents and godparents and newly baptized adults are encouraged to take this candle home and relight it each year to celebrate the anniversary date of the baptism. These candles are no longer made from tallow or beeswax as was the ancient custom. But the light each candle brings reminds everyone within its glow of the light of the risen Christ which shines in our hearts.

I want to walk as a child of the light… I want to follow Jesus.
